Chromite Velorum is a Mk.VI Canadian jaeger. Currently assigned to the Anchorage Shatterdome, she is responsible for defending the Northern Pacific from kaiju attack.

History[]

Impressed by the robustness of the VOLK-9 torso core following Valor Omega's deployment, PPDC brass soon gave the go-ahead to push the frame into limited production. Two more VOLK-9 jaegers entered service before the first in a pair of upgraded variants, designated Block II, was ordered by Canada. Chromite Velorum launched on August 21, 2033 and was accordingly placed under the command of Kaiju War veterans Keon Desjardins and László Khasanov. Following a successful series of trials throughout 2034, Velorum became a formal member of the Anchorage Strike Group on January 5, 2035.

Features[]

Like its fellow VOLK-9 brethren, Chromite Velorum's primary role in combat is that of a long-range fire support unit. Plasma bolts fired from its Y-11 revolution cannons are remarkably dense in nature, bleeding minimal energy and thus allowing for almost total energy retention even when fired over long distances. Complementing the devastating one-hit killing power of the Y-11s is a pair of plasma gatlings, which, while relatively lacking in punch, makes up for this with sheer volume of fire. Because the gatlings are modular attachments, they can be easily purged when their battery cells run low. Although Block II VOLK-9s have the option of mounting modular chainswords, Velorum herself does not make frequent use of such weaponry.

Velorum's focus on ranged weaponry does not detract from its prowess in close combat. The jaeger's low center of gravity and dense, multiple-layered armor enable it to absorb tremendous amounts of damage, while its long arms provide a considerable reach advantage during melee slugfests. However, the copious amounts of structural reinforcement inherent to the VOLK-9 series makes for an inherently "rigid" jaeger; this, combined with Velorum's unusually long arms, presents a number of challenges when engaging kaiju that have slipped past the jaeger's guard. To make up for such a deficiency, Desjardins and Khasanov have accordingly adopted a fighting style that centers around maintaining distance between themselves and their opponent through extensive use of feints and longitudinal footwork.
